  • Josh Barbieto organized a homecoming dance at home for his sister Jennifer on Sept. 27 after she was denied entry to her boyfriend’s school dance at Douglas High School—he paid for decorations and snacks to create a memorable event.  The Record Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation is promoting dark skies to draw stargazers and boost tourism by partnering with communities to meet the Starry Skies Certification Program — officials said the program will cut light pollution to help wildlife and local businesses.  The Nevada Appeal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Nevada College freshman Jessica Resong earned a Girl Scouts Gold Star Award for her project on reducing light pollution. She presented her findings on Sept. 13 at the WNC star party where she explained how lowering glare from sources like electronic billboards helps preserve the night sky.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Carson City officials announced that several road closures and lane restrictions will be in effect next week, Oct. 6–12, due to road and utility work. The plan includes closures at Mills Park access, State Street and William Street, plus lane restrictions affecting citywide roadway striping, Baker Drive, Boeing Way, College Parkway and other locations.  The Nevada Appeal

  • JoAnne Skelly, an extension educator, writes that fall colors are not starting earlier since day length stays the same while warm September weather means only cherry tomatoes have ripened and larger tomatoes are just changing color. She noted that critters (from scrub jays to rats) have challenged her garden and led her to decide not to grow tomatoes next year.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Carson High senior Charlotte Roberts qualified for the state girls golf tournament at Eagle Valley East with an 11th-place finish and Douglas freshman Charlie Garrison met the new standard by shooting 93-87—both will compete in Boulder City on Oct. 13-14.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High girls tennis lost 17-1 to Reno at the Class 4A North regional tournament — Douglas High fell 14-4 to Galena; both schools will begin the individual event at Bishop Manogue on Oct. 14. Meanwhile, Carson High volleyball beat Damonte Ranch in four sets and Carson boys soccer lost 4-2 to Hug before traveling to Wooster today at 12:30 p.m.  The Nevada Appeal
