Good morning, Carson City. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 22nd of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friends are raising funds for Douglas County school counselor Dori Draper and her daughter Chloe after a June 9 fire in Gardnerville Ranchos, where firefighters arrived at 8 p.m. and saw flames coming from a back bedroom; organizer Amanda Johnson said the fundraiser reached 56% of its $6,500 goal with 32 donations, and although Draper, who was treated for smoke inhalation and left the hospital the next day, is insured, rebuilding will take time + the community stands ready to help.  The Record Courier
  • Joyce Buckingham, the executive director of Ron Wood Family Resource Center, will retire after nearly 20 years on the job—she is ensuring the center runs smoothly until a new director is hired. The center has grown from a $500,000 budget with six grants in 2006 to a $2.5 million budget with 21 grants today—providing services like financial aid, parenting classes, healthy foods and crisis support to local residents.  The Nevada Appeal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, multiple boats capsized at Lake Tahoe near D.L. Bliss State Park when a sudden squall whipped the waters into eight-foot waves—emergency teams confirmed six fatalities with two people still missing as they continued search operations on the lake.  CarsonNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Douglas County planning commissioners will review the TDR program at the courthouse Tuesday at 1 p.m.—the program transfers development rights from agricultural fields closer to urban areas to protect farming while recommendations include an online registry and infrastructure assessments for the 2026 master plan. Consultant Wood Rogers will submit a report in September with a final update in October as critics, including Gardnerville Ranchos resident Terry Burnes, warn the tool may lead to increased urban development.  The Record Courier
  • The Carson City Sheriff’s Office added two K9 teams when deputies Michael Jerauld and Jaime Carillo finished their handler training and were paired with K9s Bery and Dakota. The teams will begin patrol and join community outreach—helping maintain local safety.  The Nevada Appeal
