- ➤ Friends are raising funds for Douglas County school counselor Dori Draper and her daughter Chloe after a June 9 fire in Gardnerville Ranchos, where firefighters arrived at 8 p.m. and saw flames coming from a back bedroom; organizer Amanda Johnson said the fundraiser reached 56% of its $6,500 goal with 32 donations, and although Draper, who was treated for smoke inhalation and left the hospital the next day, is insured, rebuilding will take time + the community stands ready to help. - ➤ Joyce Buckingham, the executive director of Ron Wood Family Resource Center, will retire after nearly 20 years on the job—she is ensuring the center runs smoothly until a new director is hired. The center has grown from a $500,000 budget with six grants in 2006 to a $2.5 million budget with 21 grants today—providing services like financial aid, parenting classes, healthy foods and crisis support to local residents. - ➤ Douglas County planning commissioners will review the TDR program at the courthouse Tuesday at 1 p.m.—the program transfers development rights from agricultural fields closer to urban areas to protect farming while recommendations include an online registry and infrastructure assessments for the 2026 master plan. Consultant Wood Rogers will submit a report in September with a final update in October as critics, including Gardnerville Ranchos resident Terry Burnes, warn the tool may lead to increased urban development.
