CRIME NEWS

  • A Carson City man, Da’Lecs Smith (25), is held without bail after being accused of open murder in an April 30 shooting near the Blue Bull bar, and his two-day preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 25 and 26 at Carson City Justice Court where he could face life in prison without parole if convicted.  The Nevada Appeal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Lombardo threatened to veto the education budget if charter school teacher pay raises are not included, as lawmakers dispute oversight in the final weeks of the session. Principal Eric Perez of High Desert Montessori said the change is needed—charter schools now form the state’s second-largest district—to ensure salaries match those of public school teachers.  News4
  • WNC student government representatives expressed concern over federal education changes during a forum with President Kyle Dalpe—leaders worry that new policies may impact financial aid and academic programs. They noted that as a small institution they get less funding than larger universities and are waiting for final budget decisions in June or July.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High freshman Kyra Mulvihill was selected as a Nevada state winner in the 2025 Celebrate the West art competition hosted by the Western Governors’ Association after presenting her watercolor piece in an Art Foundations class taught by Adriane Wacker. Her work is now in the running for the People’s Choice Award — voting began May 9.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, CAMPO will review an interlocal agreement with Lyon County to manage $1.25 million from Surface Transportation Block Grant funds for a study to find a future location for a Carson River bridge—this agreement includes a 5 percent local match and will run through the end of 2028. The meeting is set for 4:30 p.m. in the Carson City Community Center board room—851 E. William St.  The Nevada Appeal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • An April report from Sierra Nevada REALTORS shows that Northern Nevada's housing market stayed steady with rising prices for single-family homes and condos while Carson City saw a modest drop in its median price amid increased inventory — a sign that buyer activity is growing across the region. The report notes that seasonal trends may change and advises residents to consult a REALTOR for the latest market updates.  News4
