EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation invested $6.5M to launch its —Up Next Nevada Initiative— in Carson City to train 210 young workers in after-school and childcare centers statewide. The program partners with Nevadaworks and the Boys and Girls Clubs to build a skilled workforce for jobs in education, energy and healthcare.  CarsonNow
  • Governor Joe Lombardo launched a new center to help school districts and charter schools meet new accountability measures—former state superintendent Steve Canavero was named interim executive director starting Oct. 27.   • Twenty-nine new officers from 16 agencies will take their oath as POST Academy Class 2025-03 in a ceremony set for November 20 at 1 p.m.—held at LifeChurch on Snyder Avenue in Carson City with keynote speaker Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope and POST Executive Director Michael Sherlock. The event comes after 716 hours of intensive training and is sponsored by LifeChurch—marking a significant milestone in local law enforcement education.  CarsonNow

  • Wiley’s Wellness Sanctuary, founded by Taylor Melendes, will hold a grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 2 to 8 p.m. at 1049 S. Carson St.—the venue will offer healing therapies and crystal treatments for those seeking sacred wellness services.  CarsonNow

  • Carson High School football players earned several 4A all-region awards this season, with Johnathan Alvarado running 1,222 yards and senior Zack Eaton making the first team.   • Douglas High School football players earned postseason all-region awards for Class 5A North last weekend—senior Zack Jackson led with 2,025 rushing yards and 60 tackles as the lone offensive first team pick while senior Drake Ulmer received first team honors on defense and others earned second team or honorable mention distinctions.  The Nevada Appeal
