  • Carson City nonprofits are facing more calls for food support after federal SNAP benefits were stopped on Nov 1, and groups like the Northern Nevada Dream Center report running out of supplies. Lawmakers approved nearly $39 million for food banks to buy extra food—local teams are extending hours to help families amid growing food insecurity.  The Nevada Appeal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • This morning, East Fork firefighters put out a .55 acre blaze above Holbrook Highlands and quickly doused a 10 by 15 foot burn pile on Jones Ranch Road (revived by high winds) while fire marshal Amy Ray warned residents to fully douse burn piles to avoid paying for response costs.  The Record Courier

  • Carson High School student body president Kyle Allen is honored this week at the Rotary Club meeting. He works hard in speech and debate, FBLA and as a legal assistant and also serves as a youth legislator—showing his strong leadership and care for the community.  The Nevada Appeal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • JoAnne Skelly, an Extension Educator Emerita, said excessive nighttime lighting draws birds close to dangerous areas and causes collisions along with energy depletion. She urged local residents to reduce unnecessary lights or use warm, low-level bulbs (April to June and August to November) to protect migrating birds.  The Nevada Appeal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Douglas High School football will open the Class 5A North regional playoffs Friday night in Sparks against top-seeded Spanish Springs. The Tigers, who lost to Reed on Thursday, hope to boost their offense and use special teams trickery—especially on kickoffs—to keep their season alive.  The Nevada Appeal
