- ➤ Hannah Gerow is a Carson High middle blocker who excels on the volleyball court and in the Medical Assistant program while balancing a 3.31 GPA and caring for her 2-year-old son—she plans to study nursing at Western Nevada College after graduation. The Nevada Appeal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ NV Energy will install 53 new cameras as part of its Power Safe NV program to spot wildfires early across Nevada — 35 in the north, 15 in the south, with three mobile units for areas that are hard to reach. The Public Utilities Commission approved the plan and the cameras will operate on the University of Nevada Reno’s ALERT Wildfire network to help fire crews respond faster. News4

- ➤ The Open Space Advisory Committee unanimously recommended approval of the JohnD Winters Centennial Park Master Plan, which will add a new bike park, multiuse fields and improved parking while the Parks and Recreation Commission had already supported the plan. The committee also backed a conservation easement on Old Woods Ranch covering 130 acres+ to protect varied lands and support future trail connectivity before the recommendation goes to the Board of Supervisors. - ➤ The Nevada Department of Human Services said that if the federal shutdown continues past October 30, SNAP benefits for roughly 477000 residents may be delayed until funding resumes — meanwhile, the Division of Social Services is still accepting new applications. Federal officials warned in an Oct. 10 letter that benefits might not cover November if the shutdown persists. News4

- ➤ Douglas High School volleyball fell to Carson on Senior Night Tuesday at home, ending their chances for a regional postseason. The Tigers lost in straight sets — 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 — and finished the season with a 12-14 record and 2-6 league mark. The Record Courier
