CULTURE NEWS

  • Frey Ranch Distillery will host its fourth annual Whiskey Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday — the event features food trucks, tours, craft vendors, live music and a station where guests with help from the USDA Forest Service can make their own ornament.  The Nevada Appeal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada State Climate Office and National Weather Service are asking local volunteers to measure rain, hail, and snow with a 4-inch rain gauge to help improve weather forecasts in the countryside and high places. The program offers training and sometimes free gauges—volunteers can report online whenever they observe precipitation.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Carson City's Board of Supervisors approved DR Horton's 92-townhome project at the southeast corner of GS Richards Boulevard and Silver Oak Drive after the Planning Commission granted a special use permit on Aug 27—conditions include traffic improvements and open space standards that replace a former 178-apartment plan. Supervisors also approved two grant submittals for outdoor recreation projects and appointed three new Airport Authority members to guide future airport growth.  The Nevada Appeal
  • The Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the community center to discuss the JohnD Winters Centennial Park Master Plan, which calls for a bike park in upper Centennial and new youth football fields in lower Centennial—efforts to update longtime park facilities. The commission will also review a plan to upgrade the Riverhead Trailhead at 603 Marsh Road with an estimated $2.4 million makeover and funding yet to be determined.  The Nevada Appeal
