COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Audrey Payne, the second of two hikers, completed the legendary 1,600-mile Carson City to Canada Quest when she finished a 2,600-mile journey on Sept 20 and received a $5,000 reward during a celebration at the Kings Canyon Trailhead on Sept 26—she began her trek from the Nevada State Capitol steps on July 3.  CarsonNow
  • Carson City’s 775 Off-Road Recovery will resume searching for the missing hiker Ryan on Wednesday, October 1st at 9:30 a.m. at the Jumbo Grade OHV Trailhead in Washoe Valley (an additional search will take place on Saturday, October 4th if needed) while volunteers are encouraged to come prepared with proper gear for the rugged terrain.  CarsonNow
  • After one of the largest events closed Genoa this weekend, October begins in Carson Valley with the Candy Dance Arts and Crafts Faire, and the season will bring the Coffin Races and Fall Festival as well as East Fork Gallery’s Scarecrow Festival on Oct. 4—offering fun family activities. Additional events include Corley Ranch’s Pumpkin Patch open daily until the end of October, the Carson Valley Art Studio Tour on Oct. 11-12, Genoa’s Harvest Festival and guided tours of Mottsville Cemetery on Oct. 18, with Nevada Day celebrated on Oct. 31 and a parade on Nov. 1.  The Record Courier
  • Reconnect 180, a Carson City nonprofit that supports reentry for formerly incarcerated individuals, will host its Launch and Open House on Oct. 1 from 4—7 p.m. at The Studio, 177 W. Proctor Street; a special presentation at 5 p.m. will explain its programs to break barriers for successful reintegration.  CarsonNow

CULTURE NEWS

  • JoAnne Skelly, an extension educator, said Master Gardeners organized a tour of five local gardens with clear signs, good directions plus plenty of volunteers. The tour featured sites such as Blomma Flower Farm with new zinnias, a pollinator-friendly yard, a view of the mountains, and Sierra Shadow’s lavender maze.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Carson City road report for this week shows closures and lane reductions due to road and utility work—Mills Park access at the Oxoby Loop and State Street are closed weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—while repairs on Otha Street, Boeing Way, Roop, Stewart, and William Street will bring additional lane restrictions.  CarsonNow
  • Nevada signed an agreement with the DOJ last week that will remove the state from the federal sanctuary list—Gov. Lombardo said it planned to use the national guard for immigration enforcement—and requires the continued use of FEMA funds for ICE partnerships in Reno and Las Vegas.  CarsonNow

HEALTH NEWS

  • Physical therapy can help older adults improve balance because nearly 30% have fallen at least once a year—Carson Valley Health Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy works on the proprioceptive, visual, and vestibular systems to reduce future fall risks. This approach is designed to help maintain independence and safety in daily activities.  The Nevada Appeal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Associate Professor JoAnne Skelly said fall colors do not start sooner because they depend on shorter days even though warm weather in September made the season feel early. She noted that only cherry tomatoes are ripe while large ones are just starting to turn red—she will not grow tomatoes next year due to ongoing critter problems.  CarsonNow

  • Carson High School girls volleyball will host the Manogue Miners on Oct.2 for their final home game and senior night—the freshman JV game starts at 3:45 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m. as five seniors are honored.  CarsonNow
