- ➤ Carson High School senior Larkin Russell will attend the University of Vermont next fall to study animal science and join the swim team—she earned a 4.0 unweighted GPA while taking eight AP classes. - ➤ CAMPO has proposed a formal amendment to update projects in the Transportation Improvement Program and opened a 14-day public comment period starting today and ending October 1. - ➤ The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada voted Tuesday to approve NV Energy proposals that will change net metering rules—new rooftop solar credits will be calculated every 15 minutes with a 25% reduction if unused and Southern Nevada customers may face a 9% monthly rate hike. The commission also approved reconsideration of a consumer-funded wildfire insurance policy which NV Energy will revise after gathering more details. FOX Reno
- ➤ The Nevada Department of Transportation is seeking sealed bids for Contract #4550 to build a transit mobility hub, aquatic invasive species inspection station and pedestrian crossing on SR 28 from the US 50 intersection to the Carson City County line in Douglas County. Proposals will be accepted at 1263 S. Stewart St. until 1:30 p.m. on October 23 and contract plans are available online or in hard copy for $25 — shipping, with a 4.50% goal for disadvantaged business participation and no State Bidder’s Preference. - ➤ A health advocate warned that Parkinson’s disease is a growing crisis affecting nearly 5,000 Northern Nevada residents and will dramatically change how families live over the next decade. The Parkinson Support Center of Northern Nevada urged Congress to protect NIH funding and called on lawmakers to prioritize expanded research and care in the 2027 legislative session—helping ensure vital support for affected families. - ➤ The Northern Nevada Basketball Officials Association is asking individuals to become basketball officials for middle school games that began in September and for high school games starting in November. Training sessions will be held at the Boys and Girls Club on 9th Street in Reno from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 28, Nov. 11, and Nov. 20 — interested candidates should register soon to get certified and help keep the games safe and fair. - ➤ Carson High School basketball will induct its third Hall of Fame class next month at the Governor’s Mansion—honoring eight individuals and three championship teams including the historic 1936, 1937 and 1938 squads. - ➤ Douglas High girls cross country finished second at the Twilight Invite at Damonte Ranch High School with 58 points—junior Amy Van Wagenen placed sixth with a 20:23 finish—while Carson led the meet with 33 points. Other Douglas teams had mixed results last week as the volleyball team won 25-7, 25-19, 25-12 against Hug, the soccer teams lost (girls 3-0 to Galena and boys 9-0 to Wooster), and both tennis squads fell in their matches while the girls golf team saw Charley Garrison finish third at D’Andrea.
