COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayor Bagwell, Sheriff Furlong and Fire Chief Nyberg are planning the annual 9/11 remembrance on Sept. 11 at the 9/11 Memorial Site in Mills Park; food and refreshments by The Bus Boy will be available from 5 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.—local leaders and a prayer team will lead reflections to honor the unity that emerged after the Sept. 11 attacks.  The Nevada Appeal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Nevada College Continuing Education will start an eight-week Community Health Worker training program on Oct. 1—classes are held Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The 40-hour course meets national C3 Council standards—giving students a certificate to work in clinics and public health programs.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson City School District has changed its reading curriculum by signing a seven-year, $1.1 million contract with Amplify to use science-backed methods for teaching literacy—38 teachers are in their second training year and 20 more will start this year to boost student reading skills.  The Nevada Appeal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Carson High girls soccer rallied with two late goals on Tuesday—scored by Makayla Rabideau and Sophia Vega—to beat Reed, and the boys earned a 1-0 win on Wednesday with a late goal from Jonathan Hernandez. The school also saw its volleyball team fall to Spanish Springs and Charlotte Roberts finish seventh in girls golf, with teams now preparing for their next match.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High boys soccer is 3-2-1 after a 1-0 win over McQueen on Wednesday and the Senators are trying hard to score more goals this season. Head coach Pedro Chavez said losing many players last year led to new tactics – the team now faces a league that splits teams between the Sierra and High Desert leagues – and he expects improvements as they build strength.  The Nevada Appeal
