COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department will host the fourth annual volunteer cleanup at Lone Mountain Cemetery on Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.—volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes and bring sunscreen and water bottles while tools, gloves, coffee and water are provided.  The Nevada Appeal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to a half-acre brush fire near the entrance to Pine View Estates on Tuesday just after 2 p.m.—several fire trucks and a hand crew worked to control the blaze and ease traffic slowdowns on Ray May Way while the Nevada State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the incident.  The Record Courier
  • Carson City first responders responded to a house fire at 9:19 PM on August 16 and rescued David Harold, 78, who was taken to the hospital for advanced medical care but died the following day—investigators are reviewing the cause of the fatal incident.  News4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WNC Professor of Geosciences Winnie Kortemeier is offering a Geology of Nevada class this fall on Wednesdays from 1-3:45 p.m. The course includes up to three field trips (which help students earn science credits for transfer degrees) and begins Aug. 25.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada Treasury has launched its fifth annual art contest for Nevada students from pre-K to 12 to show what they want to be when they grow up—submissions are open until Oct. 3 and winners will receive prizes of $1,000, $500, or $250 via a 529 college savings account; the teacher with the most eligible submissions will get a $200 gift card.  The Nevada Appeal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Douglas High School football will host Class 3A North opponent Elko Friday after a loss to Fernley, and Coach Kyle Mays said he expects the team to face a fast and physical challenge—forcing the Tigers to rely on new quarterback options following Joe Michel's injury. The game offers a chance for revenge and the Tigers' first win of the 2025 campaign.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Dayton High School football beat Wooster 45—0 last Friday to start the season at 1-0, and the Dust Devils now plan to compete for a playoff spot this fall as they rebuild after a decade without a winning season. Junior running back Duke Evans rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns while head coach Terrence Spann said the team is focused on building its running game.  The Nevada Appeal
