COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During Burlington Coat Factory’s grand opening on July 25 at Topsy Lane, the store donated $5,000 to help Jacks Valley Elementary get school supplies through the Adopt A Classroom program. Principal Pam Gilmartin said the school will use the money for teacher supplies — store manager Tina Evans noted that the community is pleased to see the store return.  The Record Courier

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 39th annual Bowers Bluegrass Festival will begin on Aug. 22 with local bands and headliner 'Never Come Down' set to perform on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23 while food trucks, a beer and wine garden, a jamming tent, shuttle service and open access to the Bowers pool and mansion add to the event—activities will end when it gets dark each day. Advance purchase is needed for a country supper on Aug. 22—tickets cost between $30 and $150 with discounts available for students and free entry for kids 12 and under.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Wreckless Strangers, a Bay Area band blending rock with funk and soul, will perform at the Brewery Art Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2—joining opening act Leslie Stevens on stage for a night of new, original music.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Carson City Planning Commission approved a state project near the Capitol Complex that includes an 89,250-square-foot office building, a four-level parking garage with 609 stalls, and a two-story operations building which will be built in the coming months to modernize state office space while matching the historic downtown style. The commission also gave unanimous approval for an airport development of five buildings that will bring the first café in 15 years, a metal storage container at the Multi-Use Athletic Center, a commercial child care facility on Hot Springs Road, and a revised access road near Horse Creek Ranch that will save 40 old-growth trees — further supporting growth in Carson City.  The Nevada Appeal
