  • Today, the Nevada Humane Society in Carson City holds two dogs, one puppy, two cats, and dozens of kittens brought in by local finders or Humane Enforcement Officers; lost pets are held for five days before they become available for adoption. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lightning sparked a small fire at 1:32 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30 near Old Clear Creek Road in northern Douglas County near Carson City that was contained to 900 square feet by more than two dozen personnel from several agencies—including East Fork Fire Protection District, Carson City Fire Department, the BLM and the U.S. Forest Service—using hand tools and bladder bags with no injuries or structures damaged.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Carson City deputies arrested four men in recent days—a 32-year-old man was stopped early Wednesday for DUI after his vehicle failed to turn on Fairview near Highway 50, a 46-year-old man was taken Tuesday evening for a probation violation after being found intoxicated outside a store on Highway 50, a 35-year-old man was booked on a theft warrant, and a 49-year-old man was booked on a misdemeanor contempt warrant.  CarsonNow
  • Proceedings in a vehicular homicide case have been halted as doctors evaluate 64-year-old Stephen Michael Pawlowski, accused of being intoxicated during the March 20 head-on collision that killed 24-year-old Brian A. Vasquez-Gonzalez (with a Sept. 22 hearing set to assess his competency).  The Record Courier

  • A pristine 1884 Carson City Morgan silver dollar valued at $350 will be raffled on August 16 at the upcoming Carson City Mint Coin Show + raffle tickets cost $5 and are sold at the Nevada State Museum on 600 N. Carson Street.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Families in northern Nevada are getting ready for school with Carson City set to start on August 18 while vaccine clinics run today and through August in Reno and Sparks. Local groups are offering free school supplies on August 1, a back-to-school bash on August 15 at Mills Park in Carson City & an early shopping event on August 2 at Kohl’s for low-income children.  News4
  • Construction is underway on the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s fifth Smart Start center at 2805 Mountain St that will house up to 80 children from newborns to age 5 — the project upgrades a former law office by adding improved fire safety, new play structures and a laundry facility. The $2 million renovation, partly supported by a $1.6 million grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation, is expected to open in January.  The Nevada Appeal
