ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local experts reported that Lahontan Reservoir in Silver Springs is under a harmful algae bloom advisory after a thick green build-up was seen at the boat ramp. Environmental scientist Weston Fettgather and state veterinarian Dr. Peter Rolfe warned that exposure to the toxins could cause skin, respiratory, or stomach problems and urged residents to avoid the water (an informational session was held Monday and a HAB reporting tool was launched).  News4

  • Jeff Knight retired after 40 years as state entomologist with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, where he safeguarded the state's agriculture and natural ecosystems (protecting food security from invasive species).  News4
  • Rep. Dina Titus introduced the FAIR BET Act with Rep. Ro Khanna to restore full tax deductions for gambling losses after a tax reconciliation package limited deductions to 90% of losses. The bill is aimed at helping professional gamblers who argued that the change hurt their earnings + may soon be reviewed by Congress.  News4

HEALTH NEWS

  • Carson City Health and Human Services will conduct ground fogging in northeast neighborhoods including Riverview Park and Empire Ranch Golf Course on Wednesday night from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Residents are advised to remain indoors and secure outdoor items—officials say minimal ultralow volume chemicals are used—to help reduce mosquito populations.  FOX Reno
