CRIME NEWS

  • Carson City SWAT and SET teams arrested 28-year-old Ernst Johnson on June 26 in connection with the April 30 homicide of Gilbert Lopez III; a search of his South Curry Street home found a firearm and drugs while he now faces charges for homicide, gun possession, and drug offenses on a $250,000 bond.  CarsonNow

CULTURE NEWS

  • An outdoor concert at the BAC Outdoor Stage featured Paige and The Overtones with opening act Western Kingbirds on June 21 at 7 p.m., giving Carson City residents a free night of classic country and honky-tonk music with food trucks, a kids area and lawn chairs provided. The event was part of the ongoing Levitt Amp series, while 2nd Street was closed from June 21 to August 23 each Saturday evening—details that guide plans for upcoming shows.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its June 12 graduation, Douglas High School recognized many Honor Roll students from all grades by listing the names of those chosen for outstanding achievement. The ceremony celebrated these academic successes as the school honored both freshmen and upperclassmen.  The Record Courier
  • On June 10, Western Nevada College celebrated 11 graduates of its Higher Education in Prison Program at Northern Nevada Correctional Center—these students earned a total of 13 degrees in programs such as welding and automotive mechanics. College and correctional officials praised the graduates and said job opportunities will grow as Fair Chance employers hire released students.  CarsonNow
  • Douglas Lacrosse gained official recognition under the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association after nearly a decade at Douglas High School; the team ended the season with an 8-7 record and coach Brayden Worthington, an original player, was named coach of the year. The program started as a club sport for girls in 2016 and added a boys team in 2017+ Worthington took over as coach in 2024 and led practices and games through the spring.  The Record Courier

  • Carson City Health and Human Services reported a second hantavirus case in Douglas County after a woman over 50 was hospitalized from exposure to rodent droppings during home renovations—officials said the investigation is ongoing—urging residents to use safe cleaning practices.  CarsonNow
