ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Carson City Fire Department responded at around 4:15 p.m. Monday to a landfill fire off Highway 50 East — smoke had eased by 5:11 p.m. with no threat to nearby property.  CarsonNow

CRIME NEWS

  • Carson City deputies arrested a man for felony domestic battery with strangulation and assault with a deadly weapon during a May 31 domestic call on David Street and also detained other suspects for DUI and drug-related offenses from May 31 through early Monday.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carson Middle School student Samuel Salanoa won the inaugural Mario Kart Championship hosted by Bordewich Bray Elementary this past weekend, where 20 Carson City students raced on virtual tracks—3D-printed trophies were awarded to the top finishers and the event was supported by the Northwest Regional Professional Development Program. Carson Middle School’s Cameron King finished second while Matias Maciel and Adam Espinoza took third and fourth places.  CarsonNow
  • Carson City School District is asking parents to register and update all pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and new or returning student information for the 2025-26 school year via an online system while ensuring required documents like birth certificates and proof of residency are provided. The district will also host in-person school visits and a Ready to Rock Kinder program from June 12—June 27 to help children prepare for kindergarten.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Lawmakers struck an education compromise that adds transparency to the Opportunity Scholarship program—this deal also boosts funding for pre-K and offers transportation help to students leaving low rated schools. The amendment was posted on May 28 with less than 32 hours left in the legislative session, and officials said new accountability steps will be applied to poor performing schools.  CarsonNow
  • Western Nevada College opened 'The Link,' a new career and community resource center in the Aspen Building on the Carson City campus on May 8 to help students explore careers and receive job training. The center is funded by grants from the William N. Pennington Foundation, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation and the NV Energy Foundation and will offer resume assistance and job fairs to connect students with local employers.  CarsonNow
