  • Carson High junior Alaze Solis received a 2004 Infiniti FX35 donated by the Wa She Shu Foundation—led by local businessman Ted Rupert—on May 28 to help her balance school and work. Vice Principal Josh Billings said Solis, who works at Taco Bell and is active in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, has received important support to pursue her future goals.  The Nevada Appeal

CRIME NEWS

  • Carson City police arrested a 57-year-old man for suspected DUI during a welfare check on Highway 50, a 28-year-old for driving with a revoked license after a record check revealed suspended registration, a 30-year-old for violating a suspended sentence with a preliminary breath test of .432, and a 47-year-old for an outside warrant following a stop sign violation — all facing bail from $1,277 to $3,000.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Douglas High School students will host the Mountain Madness Block D fundraiser today with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. and the Powder Puff football game starting at 6 p.m.—the event features contests like tug of war, milk chug, and a staff lip sync and raises funds for future school projects and a Block D Memorial Scholarship.  The Record Courier
  • ComputerCorps has opened registration for its summer “Every Home ‘A’ Classroom” TechCamp for kids ages 9 to 15 in Carson City — three two-week sessions at 4630 US Highway 50 East run from June 16 to June 27, July 7 to July 18, and July 28 to August 8. The camps meet Monday through Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and cost $500, with partial scholarships available for families in need — call ComputerCorps for more details.  CarsonNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Joe Lombardo signed a bill on May 26 that fines ghost kitchens—restaurants using food delivery apps under different names—for giving false license information and mandates that delivery apps remove violating restaurants within 10 days or face a $500 daily fine. The law will take effect on January 1.  FOX Reno
  • The Nevada Assembly unanimously passed the Housing Access and Attainability Act on Wednesday night, a law led by Governor Joe Lombardo that creates a $250 million attainable housing fund aimed at reducing costs and expanding housing eligibility—using state funds and housing division dollars—. The bill now moves to the state senate for further debate ahead of the session ending June 2.  News4
  • Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon will delay his planned retirement until the end of June as the city searches for his replacement—the Board of Supervisors recently selected Glen Martel as the new city manager pending contract talks.  The Nevada Appeal
  • The Nevada Assembly passed a bill to expand paid leave benefits for public and private workers by reducing the waiting period to 90 days and raising leave time from eight to 12 weeks — the measure now will move to the state senate and then to the governor for approval.  News4

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nevada Department of Agriculture is urging horse owners to vaccinate their animals against West Nile virus as mosquitoes become more active and suggesting they remove standing water (and use fly control) to reduce exposure at dawn and dusk. The department also confirmed two rabies cases in Carson City and Washoe County and advised pet owners to update their rabies vaccines.  News4
