CULTURE NEWS

  • The Levitt AMP Music Series, marking its 10th anniversary, will host 10 free outdoor concerts every Saturday from June 10 to Aug. 29 at 449 W. King St. in Carson City; bring lawn chairs and well-behaved pets (and coolers) to enjoy local bands.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Local residents visited historic memorials such as the Capitol’s Book of Fallen Heroes and Sparks’ Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza to remember Nevada’s fallen heroes from past wars—honoring military sacrifice in a heartfelt tribute. EDUCATION NEWS

  • 68-year-old Billy Gilroy earned his anthropology degree at the University of Nevada, Reno after nearly 40 years away from school and now plans to pursue an English degree. He started his return to education at Western Nevada College in Carson (a librarian encouraged his journey) and remains excited to learn.  FOX Reno
  • Veritas Preparatory School broke ground last week on its campus expansion for new classrooms serving fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grades – construction will continue throughout the summer so that students return in August to a renewed facility.  The Nevada Appeal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Wolf Pack running back Frank Hawkins learned this past week he will be inducted into the Big Sky Conference Hall of Fame for his record-setting seasons in 1979 and 1980; he remains the all-time leading rusher and this honor may encourage future recognition for Nevada athletes.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Sports events are shaping up this week and early next week. A 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Schurz will kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. to support Bert Johnson’s kidney transplant (local referee), while drag races, a pickleball tournament, rodeos and a baseball clinic also offer local action in the region.  The Nevada Appeal
