  • Carson City will hold a full-scale wildfire evacuation drill on May 29 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at soft road closures near Combs Canyon and Hobart Road with NDOT and NHP support to practice evacuating Lakeview residents to a temporary point — after the drill, a community fair will take place at the City Community Gym from 10 a.m. to noon where state and city agencies, utilities, and volunteer groups will share emergency preparedness information.  News4
  • Carson City's 7th annual Kids to Parks Day will take place at Mills Park on Saturday, May 17 and will feature activities like a Jr. Park Ranger Olympics starting at 10:30 a.m.—Mayor Lori Bagwell will proclaim the day at 10:00 a.m. while local vendors provide food options. Participants must sign up for timed slots to join the outdoor fun that celebrates the city's parks and trails.  CarsonNow
  • Carson City Dairy Queen will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, May 17 by hosting an event from noon to 5 p.m. at 3198 US Highway 50 East featuring games, raffles, prizes, face painting, a live DJ, and 50% off select menu items—attendees can also take pictures with Curly the Cone—.  CarsonNow

  • The Nevada Artists Association Gallery in Carson City invites visitors to see featured artist shows featuring Deborah Graham’s dry media and acrylic works and Jeannine Hudson’s gourd artwork and sculpture through June 20. A featured artists reception is set for Sunday, May 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. — light refreshments will be served at 449 W. King St.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar honored Carson High School marketing and FBLA students for launching Entrepreneurs in Action, a student-led business magazine that celebrates local innovation. The magazine was developed with guidance from teachers (Angila Golik and Cody Downing) and local business advisors (including Jenny Treece and retired entrepreneur Jon Rogers) and is distributed free in Carson City.  CarsonNow
  • Carson High School senior Betsy Campbell-Richards earned varsity letters in swimming and tennis while taking advanced classes and working a part-time job with a 4.49 GPA. She will graduate in June — named as the Rotary Club Senior Spotlight — and plans to study public health at the University of Nevada, Reno to become a physician assistant or educator.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Douglas High Senior Luke Davis qualified for state by finishing second in the 1,600 with a personal record and then setting another record in the 3,200—he will also run in the state 4x400 relay in Las Vegas.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High School senior Anne Davis won the Class 5A North regional 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.78 seconds at Douglas High School Friday—she also finished sixth in the long jump as she marked one of her final meets before college.  The Nevada Appeal
