  • Q&D Construction has opened the N.L. Dianda Skills Academy at Mustang to train 65 apprentices and other workers in safety, equipment operation, and English speaking—this center, which honors founder Norm Dianda, addresses a long-standing workforce shortage in the northern Nevada construction industry.  The Nevada Appeal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Capital City Arts Initiative is showing the Fable and Myths exhibit at the Bristlecone Gallery at Western Nevada College through Sept. 10, featuring art by Sue Cotter and Elaine Parks. The artists’ reception is set for May 14th from 5 to 6:30 p.m.—the exhibit explores themes of cultural and natural history.  The Nevada Appeal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carson City School District is offering free breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for children ages 2 to 18 at the Boys & Girls Club on 1870 Russell Way; the Summer Food Service Program runs Monday through Friday from June 9th to August 8th.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High School freshman Kyra Mulvihill became the first student from her school to win a state art award when she was named a Nevada State Winner in the Celebrate the West art competition on May 8th—she created her award-winning watercolor piece in an art class focused on nature’s beauty. Voting for the People’s Choice Award opened on May 9th, and her work is now in the running statewide.  CarsonNow
  • On May 9, Bordewich Bray Elementary School celebrated its teachers with a red carpet event where staff received mini Oscar trophies and handwritten notes from students—honoring their achievements as National Teacher Recognition Week ended. Teachers enjoyed special awards such as Best Dressed and Best Celebrity Impersonation, making the day a memorable celebration of their hard work.  The Nevada Appeal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, for the first time since 1957, the Washoe State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley—once restricted to large landowners—welcomes the public during its opening week from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local residents may also schedule appointments beginning May 15 to buy native and adapted plants grown to support conservation and help reduce fire danger.  CarsonNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A hearing is set at Carson City's courthouse on May 27th at 8:30 a.m. for the probate petition filed by Bradford Walton to appoint a personal representative for Patricia Stanio’s estate+ the petition will grant independent administration so that many estate actions will not require prior court approval+ interested persons will be notified as needed.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson City Board of Supervisors will interview three candidates — Stephanie Hicks, Darren Coldwell, and Glen Martel — at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday in the community center board room as the city starts its process to choose a new city manager to replace Nancy Paulson, who retires June 30; candidates have detailed plans for their first 90 days on the job.  The Nevada Appeal
