COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Carson City Senior Center at 911 Beverly Drive will host a slate of May events for older adults and local residents, including a jewelry sale fundraiser for Meals on Wheels on May 1 and 2, a potluck dance on May 3, a talk on Eastern Sierra women on May 13, and a baseball history presentation on May 20. Recurring activities include bingo on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, Thursday chair yoga with a $5 fee, and Monday karaoke sessions + various other events designed to engage the community.  CarsonNow
  • Carson High graduate Hannah Fasiang became a First Officer on a Boeing 737 after earning her commercial pilot license by logging 1500 flight hours and completing rigorous training, and she started her foundation in February to help aspiring pilots (especially women) lower flight training costs. She now flies major routes from San Francisco while continuing regular simulator training and serves as a local role model for career success.  CarsonNow

  • Carson High School crowned Angel Vega and Emma Drysdale as Prom King and Queen during Saturday's prom dance in the Morse Burley Gym—Chris Rosky and Nicole Madsen were named Friendship Ball King and Queen on Thursday evening.  CarsonNow
  • Western Nevada College will hold commencement ceremonies in May for the Class of 2025 with the Carson City event on May 19 at Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park and the Fallon ceremony on May 21 at Barkley Theatre in Oats Park + WNC Foundation Board Trustee Lupe Ramirez will deliver the address at both events.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Carson City gardeners are seeing more ants, ground squirrels, voles, and rabbits in their backyards as spring warms the weather—landscaping activity may drive pests into patios and lawns. University expert JoAnne Skelly said baby powder works by clogging the ants’ exoskeleton and helps reduce infestations without harming local hawks and owls.  CarsonNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Carson City officials report road closures and lane restrictions due to utility work this week, with 2nd Street closed to westbound traffic until June 30 and shifts affecting Gentry Lane, Fleischmann Way, College Parkway, Lompa Lane, Menlo Drive, North Ormsby Boulevard, and Stewart Street—which is reduced to one lane today until May 9.  CarsonNow
  • The Carson City Planning Commission will review a plan for 240 townhomes on 22 acres north and west of Morgan Mill Road brought by JC Plateau LLC at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the community center—851 E. William St.—and will also consider a request to change a billboard to a digital display at 800 Old Clear Creek Road while discussing two right-of-way abandonments on Monitor Peak Street and South Pratt Avenue.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Ten local bowlers were inducted into the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at a meeting held April 26 at HomeGrown Bowl lounge where the honorees—Danny Dunbar, Meaghan Rhoades, Jolly Ramsey, Fred Drye, Carolyn Kenton, Rico Pura, Renee Steele, Shane Shook, Jake Ellis-Cronan and Donnita Wass—were recognized for their performance, service or love of bowling; three youth also received $500 scholarships.  CarsonNow
