  • Nevada Humane Society in Carson City named Maggie, a friendly 5-year-old pup who is working on her house training and gets along well with children and dogs, as its Pet of the Week.   • A local woman donated cake fixings in memory of her sister who would have turned 53, and the Northern Nevada Dream Center used them to help residents like Ambrose Finn from Carson City celebrate birthdays. The center said its Virtual Food Drive saw a 32% rise in food assistance requests over the last three weeks—reflecting growing need amid tough economic times.  CarsonNow

CRIME NEWS

  • Carson City deputies and Douglas County officers responded to shots fired after a traffic stop near Cactus Jack’s Casino at the corner of Curry + Robinson streets on Thursday morning, killing a male suspect and leaving the custody status of a female involved unclear as of 10 a.m.  The Nevada Appeal
  • A person died in an officer-involved shooting near the Carson Nugget on April 17 at about 9:30 a.m.—the incident occurred at the intersection of N. Curry St. and W. Robinson St.—and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating while urging residents to avoid the area.  News4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, April 17th, Carson High School’s Student Council earned national recognition when it was named a National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils—an award for its leadership, service and school spirit initiatives.  CarsonNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bids for work on the Kahle Complete Streets program came in higher than expected—$5.2 million, so extra funds from the state, Barton Health and county TRPA will cover the gap. The project will fix flooding and improve drainage near the Tahoe Beach Club entrance, and work is set to begin next spring.  The Record Courier
  • Carson City supervisors honored four individuals for life-saving actions at a recent board meeting by awarding commendations to Robert Berger and Lucas O’Brien for a January 1 vehicle fire rescue, praising Robert Russell for a March 1 apartment fire rescue, and recognizing Guy Bovard for assisting a defendant during a March 13 seizure. Supervisors also approved a new Prominence Health insurance plan, a $125,000 grant submittal for jail family services, and easement adjustments for a housing project—steps aimed at improving public safety and parkland recreation.  The Nevada Appeal

  • The Wolf Pack football team held its second spring scrimmage today at Carson High School, and coach Jeff Choate said he plans to return next spring—aiming to make the event even better. He noted that the scrimmage gave players a low-risk chance to practice before the transfer portal reopens Wednesday—setting the stage for future improvements.  The Record Courier
