CULTURE NEWS

  • Children from the Young Chautauqua program performed at Saturday's Family Day at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center where they portrayed famous historical figures and earned graduation certificates — some will return for Western Heritage Days in Genoa on May 3.  The Record Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oasis FFA members traveled to Reno last week for the Nevada FFA State Convention where they competed, earned awards, and celebrated FFA adviser Jackie Bogdanowicz being named Ag Teacher of the Year + several students advanced to nationals in their career development events. Graduating senior Haley Ortega Roman, who thanked counselor Andy Lenon for his support, will earn her high school diploma and an associate of arts degree from Western Nevada College in May, and on April 2 many students were inducted into the National Honor Societies at the Fallon Convention Center.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Meneley Elementary School is leading a districtwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program that teaches safe, respectful, and responsible behavior today. School Principal Blaine Spires said the school uses a three-tier approach—teaching schoolwide expectations, offering targeted support, and providing individualized help—to reward positive choices and guide decisions with data.  The Record Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill would expand DUI penalties by adding fentanyl to the prohibited list and raising fines after passing in the Senate Committee on Growth and Infrastructure on Wednesday. The measure now moves to the senate floor while critics say it lacks treatment options (with fines set to rise from $1,000 to $3,000 for some misdemeanors).  News4
  • Carson City officials announced that vehicles including a ’97 Chevy S Truck and a ’10 Dodge RAM1500 will be sold at a public auction to satisfy a lien incurred by Cal-Neva Transport — the auction will take place at 9:00 a.m. on May 2nd at 1663 Forrest Way in Carson City.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Gov. Joe Lombardo introduced SB 457—an 84-page crime and public safety bill—on Monday with changes to strengthen penalties and close diversion options for offenders against vulnerable victims in Carson City. The legislation lowers thresholds for theft and fentanyl trafficking, extends the time for bail hearings, and calls for coordinated opioid recovery services while lawmakers work to secure funding amid projected costs over $10 million.  The Nevada Appeal
