COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada is urging Carson City residents to donate gently used formalwear, footwear and accessories—like dresses, shoes and suits—to help local youth attend prom at affordable prices. Donations will be accepted at the donation dock at the 4th Street Thrift Store or at Super Thrift in Sparks.  News4
  • Construction of six new pickleball courts at Mills Park will begin April 7 and finish by September 1 as Spanish Springs Construction replaces the tennis courts with concrete courts and closes nearby areas for safety — officials ask the public to avoid the area during construction.  News4

CRIME NEWS

  • Reno man Stephen Michael Pawlowski, 64, is in custody on $500,000 cash bail—accused of driving wrong-way and causing a fatal collision on Highway 50 in Glenbrook on March 20 that killed Carson City resident Brian A. Vasquez-Gonzalez; he is scheduled to appear in Tahoe Township Justice Court on April 8.  The Record Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carson City School District firmed up its tentative fiscal 2025-26 budget and now expects a $3.5 million deficit after saving costs from early retirement incentives and other measures—this aligns it more closely with previous budgets. Chief Financial Officer Spencer Winward said that hopeful economic changes in May may help cover rising expenses including a mandated retirement benefit increase.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Carson High School’s NJROTC team finished eighth among 41 teams at the Navy’s National Orienteering Competition in Pelham, Ala. on March 16-17—They also hosted a county drill meet where they ranked first overall among local school teams.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Sierra Lutheran High School will open its first major capital expansion this spring with a new multipurpose hall and academic center that includes rooms featuring augmented reality technology and spaces for student learning. The project, called Phase 2a, will be complete in May and feature the Pastor Julias Clausen Memorial Center (nicknamed the PC Center) with a large electric cross outside that is expected to boost enrollment by about 100 students.  The Record Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Assembly Bill 402, sponsored by Assemblymember Selena Torres-Fossett, was introduced to allow the Department of Transportation, local authorities, and regional transportation commissions to install automated enforcement systems in temporary work zones—if passed, these systems will enforce speed limits by having a peace officer review captured evidence before issuing a civil penalty without demerit points.  News4
  • The Carson City Fire Department is asking the Board of Supervisors on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to ratify its $3.9 million grant application from the U.S. Forest Service for hazardous fuels mitigation on Prison Hill—funds that will support defensible space projects for 573 homes from 2026 through 2031. The Board will also review a collective bargaining agreement retroactive to July 1, 2024 that raises police pay—along with a new ordinance that would fine or jail people sleeping or camping in public areas.  The Nevada Appeal

  • Carson City native and Olympic bronze medalist Krysta Palmer has been named Nevada’s next diving coach, Athletic Director Stephanie Rempe announced Monday. Palmer spent eight seasons as an assistant coach, helping the team win 32 medals at the Mountain West Championships — she will now lead the team in upcoming meets.  The Record Courier
