ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the National Weather Service issued a high wind watch in Carson City from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. as southwest winds of 25–35 mph with gusts over 65 mph may move unsecured objects—residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items to avoid damage and power outages.  The Nevada Appeal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 20, the Douglas County School Board decided not to allow a Verizon cell tower near the Douglas High School football field because of safety concerns and a lack of enough data. The board said they might review the decision if new information comes, and county commissioners will consider the case on April 3.  The Record Courier
  • Rep. Mark Amodei reintroduced the Northern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act that would let Douglas County and other regions transfer and manage federal lands for housing, flood control, and public use—while also protecting over 300,000 acres in the Ruby Mountains from oil and gas leasing.  The Record Courier
  • The Carson City Community Development Department said that the master plan update did not change the current land use for the town center project except that the Laxalt state building will change from downtown mixed use to public or quasi public+ any development in the area must go through the city permit process. The Planning Commission met at 3 p.m. Wednesday and reviewed more than 80 pages of public comment that raised concerns about confusion with the town square proposal+ city leaders will decide on future steps at a later public meeting.  The Nevada Appeal
  • On Wednesday, veterans and military supporters gathered at the Legislature in Carson City for a day-long Veterans and Military Day sponsored by the Nevada National Guard, United Veterans Legislative Council, and the Department of Veterans Services. The program featured speeches, a keynote from Brig. Gen. Rodger “Dan” Waters, and award presentations for Veterans of the Month including Daniel Walker and Dr. Robert Devin — with more than 200 supporters in attendance.  The Nevada Appeal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Justin Barlow, a Carson High School assistant coach and alum, has been hired by Sierra Lutheran to lead its Falcons as they shift from 8-man to 11-man football next season. He said he is researching the differences in play—working with coach McHenry and offensive coordinator Trevor Goodale to build a team with interest from about 20 to 25 potential players.  The Record Courier
  • Carson High softball ended Dayton’s unbeaten run with a 5-0 win Tuesday as pitcher Maddie Blanchard-Salazar allowed one hit and struck out 11 on 90 pitches — the team will host Franklin at home Friday. Carson High baseball dropped four of five games in Las Vegas and will host Reno in league play Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.  The Nevada Appeal
