COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nevada Rural Housing announced that applications for the Richards Crossing Project-Based Voucher wait list in Carson City are now open to help people move from homelessness to stable living. The wait list closes March 28 and offers one-bedroom apartments with rental assistance, including eight units reserved for chronically homeless veterans.  News4
  • On Friday, January 24, Carson City's Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #2177 held its Flannel and Frost fundraiser at the Governor's Mansion that raised over ($17,000) for the Night Off the Streets warming center and added ($6,000) from a Beacon and Spotlight Grant to reach a total of $23,000 in support of safe shelter, easing local challenges for those in need.  CarsonNow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Carson City School Board will meet Tuesday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Robert Crowell Board Room of the Community Center at 851 E. William St.—the board will discuss proposals for a student anger management program with the Department of Juvenile Services and school resource officers and consider reducing monthly meetings.  CarsonNow
  • Outgoing Eagle Valley principal Lee Conley—after nearly 30 years in education—will retire in June and hand leadership over to Fritsch Elementary School Vice Principal Gina Hoppe. Conley said Hoppe’s strong instructional background and care for students will help keep the school’s positive culture intact.  The Nevada Appeal

  • On March 20, the Carson City Clerk filed a proposed public safety ordinance that bans unauthorized sleeping or camping in public places and outlines penalties—copies are available at 885 East Musser Street, Suite 1032. The public hearing will be held on Thursday, April 3 at 8:30 a.m. in the Community Center Robert Bob Crowell Board Room at 851 East William Street.  The Nevada Appeal
  • Veterans and military supporters gathered at the Nevada Legislature in Carson City on Wednesday to network and meet lawmakers at an event sponsored by the Nevada National Guard, United Veterans Legislative Council, and Nevada Department of Veterans Services. NDVS director Mary Devine retired after 30 years of service and offered welcoming remarks as the event honored veterans with awards and Quilts of Gratitude.  The Nevada Appeal
